Dr. Hisham Jashami’s research has been focused on areas related to transportation safety, human factors, driving & bicycling simulators, autonomous vehicles, data visualization, and statistical methods. He uses data from surveys, field, and driving and bicycling simulator studies to enhance multimodal intersection safety, understand user behavior, and develop innovative traffic control device applications. Dr. Jashami intends to advance the state of the practice on how to best integrate pedestrians and bicycles into an increasingly connected and automated transportation system. Additionally, he works to develop more robust design standards for CAVs that account for the mixed-mode environment that they will likely operate in for decades to come.
During the course of his academic career, Dr. Jashami worked on externally funded research from agencies including the Federal Highway Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Pacific Northwest Transportation Consortium (PacTrans), and various State Departments of Transportation, e.g., Oregon DOT and Michigan DOT. This research has led to the publication of more than 35 peer-reviewed journal articles, conference papers, and technical reports. He is a certified Road Safety Professional Engineer.
Dr. Hisham Jashami is committed to creating a learning environment that is supportive of diversity, equity, and inclusion as well as developing students’ skills and abilities in ways that will support their success as engineering professionals. His teaching philosophy is based on the belief that active learning is the key to an engaging and productive classroom environment. Dr. Jashami helps students to articulate safety and operational problems and potential mitigation strategies, thereby developing not only their critical thinking but also the way they communicate problems and solutions to technical and non-technical audiences. Dr. Jashami teaches civil engineering classes at the undergraduate level on topics including senior design course, pavement design, and highway engineering.
