Undergraduate Scholarships & Research Fellowships

Construction Engineering Scholarship

Eligible: Any member of ASCE and/or the Construction Institute enrolled as a full-time student in an engineering or construction program. The basis for selection is a paper on any one of several topics related to construction.

Award: Award is for undergraduate tuition. One award of $1,000 is presented annually.

Eugene C. Figg, Jr. Civil Engineering Scholarship

Eligible: Any currently enrolled junior or senior civil engineering student who will be registered as an undergraduate in fall 2005, is a United States citizen, an ASCE National Student Member in good standing, and has a passion for bridges may apply for this scholarship. Must be a member in good standing at the time of application and award.

Award: Award is for undergraduate tuition. One award of $3,000 is presented annually. Recipient will be eligible to interview for an internship opportunity by the Figg Engineering Group.

Freeman Fellowship

Eligible: Any member of ASCE.

Grant: Made toward expenses for experiments, observations, and compilations to discover new and accurate data useful in engineering. Emphasis on hydraulic science and art.

Award: Award is tuition, research, and living expenses. Approximately $2,000-5,000 awarded annually.

Samuel Fletcher Tapman ASCE Student Chapter/Club Scholarship

Eligible: Any freshman, sophomore, junior, or first-year senior who is a member of his/her local ASCE student chapter/club and an ASCE National Student Member in good standing.

Award: Award is for undergraduate tuition. Approximately 12 scholarships of $2,000 each awarded annually.

B. Charles Tiney Memorial Student Chapter/Club Scholarship

Eligible: Any freshman, sophomore, junior, or first-year senior who is a member of his/her local ASCE student chapter/club and an ASCE National Student Member in good standing.

Award: Award is for undergraduate tuition. Approximately four scholarships at $2,000 each awarded annually. Not offered in 2005.


Y.C. Yang Civil Engineering Scholarship

Eligible: Any currently enrolled junior or senior civil engineering student who will be registered as an undergraduate in fall 2005, is an ASCE National Student Member in good standing, and has an interest in structural engineering may apply for this scholarship. Must be a member in good standing at the time of application and award.

Award: Two applicants may be selected for award, which is in the range of $2,000-$2,500. Scholarship funds are to be used for tuition expenses

Graduate Scholarships & Research Fellowships


Trent R. Dames and William W. Moore Fellowship

Eligible: Practicing engineers or earth scientists, professors or graduate students; ASCE membership not required.

Grant: For the exploration of new applications of geotechnical engineering or the earth sciences to social, economic, environmental, and political issues.

Award: Award of $2,000-6,000 made biennially. Next offered in 2006.


Freeman Fellowship

Eligible: Grants are made toward expenses for experiments, observations, and compilations to discover new and accurate data that will be useful in engineering.

Award: Stipend will be awarded based on funds available from the endowment. Past awards have been in the $2,000 - $5,000 range and may be allotted to one or more recipients. Award is to be used for expenses for research and experiments as stated in the eligibility requirements.

Jack E. Leisch Scholarship

Eligible: Any member of ASCE enrolled full-time in a transportation/traffic engineering graduate program; undergraduates should apply during their senior year. University must be ABET accredited. Thesis topic is considered in selection.

Award: Award is for graduate tuition. Approximately one award at $2500 annually.

J. Waldo Smith Hydraulic Fellowship

Eligible: Any graduate student who is a member of ASCE, preferably an Associate Member of ASCE.

Grant: Made toward research in the field of experimental hydraulics.

Award: Award is for tuition, research and living expenses. $4,000 awarded every third year, plus a maximum of $1,000 for physical equipment. Next offered in 2006.


Arthur S. Tuttle Memorial Scholarship

Eligible: Any member of ASCE; undergraduate should apply during the senior year.

Award: Award is generally for tuition expenses for formal civil engineering graduate study leading to the Masters degree. Approximately four scholarships at $2,000 each awarded annually.

Daniel W. Mead (paper) Contest for National Student Members

Eligible: Authors must be ASCE national student members in good standing at the time of submission to be considered.

Award: Up to $450 and a trip to the 2004 ASCE Civil Engineering Conference and Exposition in Baltimore, MD to present the winning paper. The paper will also be published in Civil Engineering Magazine.
