NAWIC Founder’s Scholarship:  The National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) began as Women in Construction of Fort Worth, founded in 1953 by 16 women actively employed in the construction industry who were looking for a support system. In honor of the founding members, The NAWIC Founders Scholarship Foundation (NFSF) was created in 1961 to award scholarships to students pursuing construction-related studies. Each year over $25,000 is awarded to worthy recipients in construction-related programs. Award amounts range from $1,000 to $2,000. This award is open to women in a degree program related to the construction industry who have at least one term remaining. Women in Construction Engineering Management or Civil Engineering programs with a career interest in the construction industry are eligible for this award. SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program - a highly-selective, prestigious, national program that includes full tuition and a very generous stipend in the range of $25,000 a year for undergraduates and $41,000 for doctoral candidates while they are in school. It also includes a book allowance of $1,000 a year, health insurance, summer internships, and travel fees for internships. Students must be U.S. Citizens, able to obtain a DoD Security Clearance, and be willing to work in a defense laboratory upon graduation. There will be approximately 300 new awards this year. Rogers Foundation President's Scholarship - is a $1500 award open to seniors whose career interest is in heavy / civil construction. The application materials require two letters of recommendation and a one-page statement of career goals. See Theresa in Owen 220 for an application. Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship: Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation operates an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding students with excellent academic records and demonstrated interest in, and potential for, careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, and engineering. This renewable scholarship award covers eligible expenses up to a maximum of $7,500 per year and is open to US citizens, permanent residents and nationals. Student applicants must be nominated by faculty or advisors. OSU nominees must be full time sophomores of juniors and have a minimum 3.80 GPA and research experience. EERI PAPER COMPETITION - to promote active involvement of students in earthquake engineering and the earthquake hazards community. The paper must be directly related to earthquake engineering or earthquake hazard reduction; must not exceed 12 pages in length inclusive of all tables and figures; and must be authored by the student alone. In addition, a faculty member or other advisor must oversee the preparation of the manuscript. Guidelines for preparing the manuscript can be obtained from the EERI web site (http://www.eeri.org/site/paper-comp#details). Morris K. Udall Scholarship - 80 scholarships of up to $5000 and 50 honorable mentions of $350 to sophomore and junior level college students committed to careers related to tribal public policy, Native American health care, or to the environment (to apply in the first two categories, you must be native American/Alaska Native). Students must have a demonstrated record of commitment to careers related to one of these three areas. Full details here. To apply, you must be selected by your university for nomination. OSU is allowed to forward no more than six nominees (in any or all of the three categories) to the Foundation for consideration. OSU Student Sustainability Initiative - is accepting grant applications for student projects. This means that as a student, you can apply for a sustainability related project. There are $12,000 available for next year in grants, and one single project may apply for up to $6,000 dollars. Projects that benefit sustainability, OSU students, and the SSI's mission, "supporting student efforts to create a sustainable community at OSU through opportunity, education, and action" are more likely to be funded. Application due November 13, 2009Full details and application here. 

Simpson Strong-tie Structural Engineering Scholarships - up to 50 $1000 scholarships awarded to 35 universities including OSU. For juniors and seniors. Submission deadline is November 1, 2009. Details here.

AGC Foundation National Scholarship – a renewable $2500 per year scholarship for all CEM and CE students interested in construction are eligible. Applications are due before November 1, 2009. Full details and application

James L. Allhands Essay Contest - Topic: Building a Professional Construction Company - The case for attracting, educating and retaining highly effective managers. Seniors in construction and civil engineering programs are invited to submit essays. The first-place winner will receive $1,000 and a trip to the 2010 AGC Convention. The first-place faculty sponsor will receive $500 and the Convention trip; second-place receives $500; and third-place receives $300. Submission deadline is November 1, 2009. ACI Foundation Fellowships - offered to high-potential undergraduate and graduate students whose studies relate to concrete and are identified by ACI-Member Faculty. The Student Fellowship can have a nominal term of up to two academic years, renewed annually, and may extend through graduate study. Annual renewal will be subject to renomination and reapplication. These awards are granted based on the availability of contributions received. Applications due October 30, 2009. Details.

The Demonstration of Energy-Efficient Developments (DEED) program was established in 1980 by the American Public Power Association. The purpose of this research, development and demonstration program is to sponsor and conduct activities related to energy innovation, improving efficiencies and lowering the cost of providing energy services to the customers of publicly owned electric utilities. DEED student research grants/internships support students studying in energy-related disciplines, increase awareness of career opportunities in public power, and provide assistance to DEED member utility sponsors. Each year up to ten, $4,000 student research grants and internships are awarded to students conducting research on an energy-related project. Sigma Xi is a scientific organization that offers grants-in-aid to fund research by undergraduate and graduate students in science and engineering disciplines. Gilman International Scholarship provides awards of up to $5,000 for US undergrads to study abroad for up to one academic year. The program serves students who have been under-represented in study abroad which includes but is not limited to: students with high financial need, community college students, students in under-represented fields such as the sciences and engineering, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds, students attending minority-serving institutions, and students with disabilities. Spring 2010 & Summer 2010 applications are now being accepted online and are due October 6, 2009. American Public Power Association (APPA) student research grants/internships support students studying in energy-related disciplines, increase awareness of career opportunities in public power, and provide assistance to DEED member utility sponsors. Each year up to ten, $4,000 student research grants and internships are awarded to students conducting research on an energy-related project. Students must be sponsored by a DEED member utility and are required to write an abstract and final report at the completion of the project. The Eugene Water & Electric Board is offering scholarships for the 2009-10 school year to support the next generation of utility workers who will successfully contribute to our industry and the community. Two $1,250 scholarships are available for university students who meet the following criteria: must be an EWEB customer or an EWEB customer's dependant; Currently enrolled at a university; Junior or senior maintaining an accumulative 3.5 grade point average; Provide at least two letters of recommendation from teachers, community leaders and/or others; Complete and return the required paperwork outlined in the application (pdf) by September 1, 2009.

Howard Preston Scholarship Award - the Columbia Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers invites applications for their two $1000 scholarships. Must be a junior or grad student with US citizenship, 3.0 GPA or higher, and have parents in or graduated from high school within these boundaries: Washington counties that include Yakima, Klickitat, Benton, Frankling, Walla Walla, and Columbia; or Oregon counties that include Morrow, Umatilla, Union, and Wallowa. Oregon Concrete & Aggregate Producers Association (OCAPA) $2000 Scholarship - for deserving undergraduate students pursuing a career related to the construction materials industry. Areas of study may include, but are not limited to, construction materials, engineering, geology, architecture, land use planning, biology, and fish & wildlife studies. Application and details. The OSU Alumni Association (OSUAA) and the OSUAA National Capital Area alumni created the National Capital Leadership Award ($3500) to assist OSU students who are eager to experience life in our nation’s capital. The ideal student applicant will work in a congressional or judicial office, government agency, non-profit organization or association, or private organization in the Washington, D.C., area. ASPE Columbia-Pacific Chapter 54 has two student scholarships available, $1,000 and $750, offered to students pursuing a degree in Construction Engineering or Construction Engineering Management at universities in Oregon or Washington. Scholarship recipient is selected based on the relative merits of the programs in which the student is enrolled or relative merits of their major to construction cost estimating; relative financial needs; involvement in construction or engineering organizations; academic standing, and value of construction cost estimating to their field of study. The OSU Student Alumni Association is searching for talented, motivated and connected students to serve on the 2009-2010 Board of Directors and will be awarded a $1000 scholarship during the tenure of their service. Deadline to apply is April 17, 2009. Details here.

Chinese Government Scholarship - On behalf of China Scholarship Council, the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco will process the application. The application deadline is April 15, 2009. Send all application materials (original and two copies) to: Consul Yao Faming, Education Office, Chinese Consulate in San Francisco, 1450 Laguna Street, San Francisco, CA 94115. Application (pdf). OSU is only affiliated with the Bejing Language and Cultural University. For more information on this university, you can contact our study abroad advisor, Theresa Cuenca. Apply through OSU only if you are currently enrolled; If you are an alum you can apply independently. If you are graduating soon, you’ll need to still be enrolled during the scholarship period in order to do this through OSU.

The Structural Engineers Foundation (SEF) is currently accepting applications for the upcoming academic year for undergraduate and graduate students studying structural engineering. Applicants will be evaluated based upon scholarship, leadership, and academic involvement. Up to four scholarships will be awarded, each in the amount of $2,000. One of the four scholarships, the Max Zar scholarship, will be awarded to students enrolled in a school in Illinois. We are also introducing a scholarship directed for students of Hispanic descent. Structural Engineers Association of Oregon Scholarship- a merit-based and need-based scholarship established to recognize and financially assist students interested in structures. The qualified candidate is an established local resident pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or a Master of Science in Civil Engineering, with an emphasis in structures. ASCE Oregon YMF Scholarship - The Oregon Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Younger Member Forum (ASCE YMF) is collecting applications for a $1,000 scholarship to be awarded to a student studying Civil or Environmental Engineering. Undergraduate students with a Sophomore or Junior standing who are enrolled in Civil or Environmental Engineering at either Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT), Oregon State University (OSU), Portland State University (PSU), or the University of Portland (UP) are eligible for this scholarship. Students graduating in Spring/Summer 2009 are not eligible. The award money is to be used for formal education expenses at the intended educational institution. Selection will be based on interest in the field of civil or environmental engineering, ASCE student chapter involvement, and community service activities. Application and details here. C.E. Boucher Memorial Scholarship - this $3,000 scholarship is awarded to 5 students from the School of Engineering at the University of Washington, Washington State University, University of Oregon or Oregon State University. Applicants must have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or better; be an Oregon or Washington State resident; and be prepared to use the award in the next academic year. ASSOCIATION of STATE DAM SAFETY OFFICIALS SCHOLARSHIP - Students interested in hydraulics, hydrology and geotechnical engineering are eligible for scholarships up to $10,000 for the 2008/2009 academic year. Recipients must be US citizens and enrolled full-time as seniors during the 2008/2009 school year. Must have minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 for the first three years of college. Deadline is March 31, 2009. A related student paper competition has a March 13, 2008 deadline.

The OSU Association of Office Professionals (AOP), formed to foster awareness, excellence and professionalism in the ranks of office personnel, offers a $500 scholarship based on achievement and potential. To qualify, applicants must be full time OSU students with sophomore, junior, or senior standing at the time of application with at least one full year of undergraduate studies remaining during the 2009-10 academic year, AND have a major or declared minor in the College of Business, OR regardless of major, have a parent or legal guardian who is a member in good standing in the OSU Association of Office Professionals. All interested, qualified students are encouraged to apply for the scholarship. A completed application, three current letters of recommendation, and a current unofficial transcript must be submitted by March 13, 2009 to Maureen Childers, Disability Access Services, A200 Kerr Administration Building, Corvallis OR 97331 or email to maureen.childers@oregonstate.edu. Undergraduate Research, Innovation, Scholarship & Creativity - is a Research Office program that supports undergraduate research activities. "Research" at OSU is interpreted broadly to reflect what goes on not only in laboratories and field stations, but also in libraries, art studios, and music practice rooms. James D. Cooper student paper competition - is open to college and university engineering students in the United States and worldwide. The winning paper will receive a $1000 Fellowship, complimentary conference registration and hotel and travel allowances to attend the 26th International Bridge Conference, June 14-17 2009, in Pittsburgh PA. Additionally, the winning paper will be considered for inclusion in the published proceedings and for presentation at the conference. Papers must be submitted no later than March 1, 2009. NATIONAL HYDROPOWER SCHOLARSHIP - an industry organization that represents the interests of the hydropower industry. This scholarship is aimed to help build the next generation of hydropower professionals and to raise the awareness of the hydropower resource in the academic community. Pacific Northwest Section of the American Water Works Association offers scholarships for students whose training will lead to a career in the public water industry. Over the years, 21 OSU students received scholarships from this program. This years seven awards range from $1,500 - $4,000. Application (pdf). Application must be received by February 29, 2009.

This is My OSU: A Destination of Choice - The Office of Community and Diversity has created an essay contest to help OSU become a destination of choice for people who are committed to diversity. The winner of the contest will win an academic year’s worth of tuition at the in-state, undergraduate rate. Full details (pdf). Deadline to apply is February 27, 2009.

Oregon State University Retirement Association has a scholarship opportunity for OSU undergraduate students. One thousand dollar scholarships are available for two students majoring in a subject that leads to a career promoting healthy aging. This could be anyone from Business to Health and Human Science and Pharmacy to Engineering. The student needs to show a connection as to how their chosen career will benefit healthy aging. The scholarship deadline is February 27, 2009. Application here (pdf).

Provost’s Literary Prize - undergraduate students at OSU consists of a $500 award and publication for on-campus distribution. The literary work can be fiction, poetry (including a group of poems), or creative nonfiction written for a general audience. The prize is open to currently enrolled undergraduate students at OSU, who may submit their own work or have work nominated by faculty members. Submissions must be the student’s original work, typed, no longer then 20 double-spaced pages for prose, or 8 manuscript pages for poetry, and include the full name, year in school, current mailing address, phone number, and student ID number of the writer. Deadline is 5:00 pm February 25, 2009. Submissions should be turned in to the Provost’s Literary Prize Committee via Keith Scribner in the English Department Office (Moreland Hall 238). AACE International Competitive Scholarships - CE and CEM freshmen, sophomores, and juniors  and seniors (who have been accepted into an appropriate graduate program), may apply. A short essay is required.  AACE International is dedicated to advancing the study of cost engineering, and cost management through the integrative process of total cost management. Application deadline is February 15, 2009. Awards are $2000 to $8000.

Point Foundation Scholarships for LGBT Students - a scholarship-granting organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students of merit. Students who will be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs for the 2009-10 school year are eligible to apply for the multiyear scholarships. The scholarship program's selection criteria include academic excellence, leadership skills, community involvement, and financial need. Particular attention is paid to students who have lost the financial and social support of their families and/or communities as a result of revealing their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. On average, a Point Scholarship devotes between $26,000 and $31,000 annually to each scholar. In return, Point Scholars agree to maintain a high level of academic performance and to give back to the LGBT community through the completion of an individual community service project each year. In addition, scholars are matched with mentors from the professional world who lend their expertise and career guidance and serve as role models. The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to women admitted to accredited baccalaureate or graduate programs, in preparation for careers in engineering, engineering technology and computer science. SWE Scholarships are only open to women pursuing baccalaureate or graduate degrees in engineering or computer science, as well as engineering and computer science students enrolled in ABET-accredited engineering programs. DEEP FOUNDATIONS INSTITUTE 2008 Student Paper Competition. Students studying in the fields of engineering, construction and geological sciences are encouraged to submit a paper for consideration. The author(s) of the winning paper will be invited to attend the DFI 2008 Conference in NYC to present the paper. Conference registration, two nights of lodging and a $750 stipend for travel expenses will be provided to the winner. Deadline to apply is February 2, 2009. Details (pdf).

OSU Libraries Undergraduate Student Research Awards - will recognize and reward OSU students who, through the comprehensive use of the OSU Libraries, demonstrated outstanding research, scholarship and originality in writing a paper of completing a project. There will be two awards given; $1000 to an upper division student and $1000 to a lower division student at Oregon State. To be eligible, students must have written their papers, or completed their research projects as part of their course work at OSU during the 2007 calendar year. OSU faculty are encouraged to nominate students whose papers or projects that reflect outstanding information literacy skills through the extensive and sophisticated use of the library services, resources and collections. ESM Consulting Engineers has established a CE Land Development Scholarship Program for students attending Pacific Northwest engineering schools who are focused on civil engineering or survey as a career goal. Students compete for one of 10 scholarships based upon career focus and academic success. Scholarships may also include internship opportunities. The purpose of the program is to promote land development civil engineering and surveying as a career choice, and to assist students in funding the high cost of undergraduate education. U.S. Department of Homeland Security Scholarship Program - for students interested in pursuing the basic science and technology innovations that can be applied to the DHS mission. This education program is intended to ensure a highly talented science and technology community to achieve the DHS mission and objectives. Eligible students must be studying in a homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) field with an interest, major, or concentration directly related to one of the homeland security research areas. Oregon NASA Space Grant Consortium Undergraduate Scholarships - up to $6,000 will be awarded and are only available to Oregon students attending Oregon Space Grant affiliate institutions. Awardees will be selected from applicant pools at each of the eligible schools. Scholarships are open to new and continuing students in the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines. The OSGC Undergraduate Scholarship Program supports the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) objectives of fostering and encouraging career goals in the aerospace industry. The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX) is currently accepting applications from college-age students and recent graduates in engineering fields who are interested in experiencing German culture, workplace, and everyday life. CBYX is a scholarship funded by the US and German governments for students in all career fields, and does not require any prior German language knowledge! Participants spend a year studying and working in their career fields while completely immersed in German language and culture. Application deadline is December 1, 2008 for the program beginning in July 2009. Full details and application.

The Eugene Chapter of the Construction Financial Management Association will provide two $1,000 scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year to students majoring in CEM. Scholarship criteria:  academic record, personal attributes and construction-related goals.  Applications are available from Jan Strombeck in 220 Owen Hall. The American Society of Professional Estimators (ASPE) Chapter 54 is offering a $1,000 and a $750 scholarship for 2008-09.  Scholarship criteria: CEM student who has achieved third-year academic standing; resident of Oregon or Washington; relative merits of the program in which the student is enrolled or relative merits of their major to construction and cost estimating; relative financial needs; involvement in construction or engineering organizations; academic standing; and value of construction cost estimating to their field of study.   Must be postmarked by:  April 25, 2008The application is available from the chapter web site.
