ANNOUNCEMENTS

OSU BEAM TEAM – It is a great day to be a BEAVER! OSU/Knife River has taken our second NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP (in 2004, and second place in 2008) in the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute's Big Beam Competition, with over 60 competing teams. Six civil engineering students designed a large-scale, pre-stressed and pre-cast concrete beam with the Knife River Corporation under the direction of the team's faculty advisor, Dr. Keith Kaufman. Entries to the competition were judged on design accuracy, lowest cost and weight, largest deflection before failure, practicality, and innovation. The students were required to prepare a technical paper and were judged on the most accurate predictions of cracking load and deflection at maximum load. Our national champions will represent OSU at PCI’s Fall Convention in San Antonio, Texas in mid-September. In addition to a cash prize, the OSU Beam Team will be reimbursed for travel costs. National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) Student Team - is one of three finalist teams for the first National NECA Student Chapter Competition: The Green Energy Challenge. The other finalist teams are the University of Washington and Penn State. Our OSU team worked all winter term on the project and will compete with a project presentation and Q & A session on September 12, at the NECA National Convention in Seattle. Jan and Greg Strombeck are the advisors/mentors for the project/competition preparation. The CEM students competing are seniors Tom Bergmann, Craig Blair, Hayley Brown, Jesse Carter and Tony Spratling. Good luck OSU!
