The vehicle represents an important step toward alternative modes of transportation that significantly reduce green house gas emissions and the type of technology advancement that you could be involved in as a future engineer. The vehicle will be on display from 3:30 to 6:00 pm on the plaza behind the Kelley Engineering Center - check it out.

COMPETITIONS
--------------------
ASCE PNW REGIONAL CONFERENCE in HELENA, MT - After braving a snowstorm, and a 4-hour stop in Denny's in Spokane at 3am, the OSU contingent (Jason Ideker, Tom Miller, 19 students and one dad) arrived in Helena about 17 hours after leaving Corvallis. Carroll College and Montana State co-hosted the conference and did a great job, with 15 schools in attendance.
Krissi Currans, a junior in CE, wrote a passionate paper and gave a great presentation on Sustainability in Civil Engineering. She did an outstanding job of answering the judges' questions, in fact so well that she earned First Place in the Technical Paper competition. Congratulations, Krissi!
The steel bridge team, led by Royal Mortier, made a tremendous comeback from a load test collapse during finals week of Winter term. They rebuilt most of the bridge, and successfully constructed the bridge, passed the lateral test, and passed the 2500 lb load test at the contest. The bridge placed 3rd in Aesthetics, as the only arch bridge entered. Overall place wasn't announced yet, but is probably 4th or 5th in a contest where many bridges either collapsed or deflected excessively and were disqualified. Great work, team!
The concrete canoe team headed up by Thanh Phan brought its entry named "Buckteeth" to MT, after struggling through a number of issues with fabrication and mix design. The mix included recycled glass aggregate. Thanh did a very good job with the presentation, and he and the team prepared an engineer's report on the process of developing the canoe. Unfortunately, the boat did not survive its maiden voyage, but the crew is eager to make improvements next year and be back in the water at WSU in 2010.
Overall, it was a fun trip and we hope that all interested CCE students will take part in the teams for next year's conference in Pullman. I'm very proud of all of these students for their sportsmanship and attitude and persistence.
~Tom Miller, ASCE Faculty Advisor
