MAR 16, Monday – Transportation Faculty Candidate presentation by Ida van Schalkwyk, Ph.D., Senior Assistant Research Professor at Oregon State University. “The Development of Aggregate Macro-Level Safety Prediction Models”, read abstract here. . . 305 Kearney Hall, 9:30 am.
MAR 19, Tuesday – “What Went Wrong with the Levy System in New Orleans?” Lawrence Roth, PE, GE, F.ASCE, is the Deputy Executive Director of ASCE in Washington, DC. All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend. 112 Kearney Hall, 12:00 pm.

CONGRATULATIONS to Prof. MICHAEL SCOTT, who just received notification that he is a 2008 recipient of the prestigious ASCE Croes Medal. The Croes Medal was established by ASCE in 1912 in honor of John James Robertson Croes, who served as president of ASCE in 1901. The Croes Medal is a national ASCE publication award across all civil engineering disciplines and recognizes a paper for its merit as a contribution to civil engineering science. Michael will receive both certificate and gold-plated medal during the group's annual business meeting in Kansas City in November.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - OMSI DaVinci Days. Join OSU engineering students in Portland assist middle school students at the Tsunami Structure Challenge using the portable wave tank and legos. Over 4,000 middle school students and families expected for this event. Share the excitement of engineering! All majors welcome! You will receive training, and you will have a great time! Training Tues March 31, 4-5pm at the Wave Lab (35th St). The event is on Sat. April 4. Free tee-shirt (Love an Engineer) for all volunteers. NOMINATIONS ARE BEING ACCEPTED for the Clara L. Simerville Award for International Education – to be awarded in her honor to an OSU undergraduate student who has voluntarily contributed to international understanding through personal relationships, scholarship and research, and involvement in campus or community organizations supporting international understanding. Students may be nominated by fellow students, faculty, staff, administrators or members of the Corvallis community. Deadline to submit application is April 6. Details here. . .
CELEBRATING UNDERGRADUATE EXCELLENCE: Research, Innovation, Scholarship, Creativity. A forum showcasing the scholarly and creative accomplishments of OSU undergraduates on May 7 in the MU Ballroom. Presentation format: Posters, table-top displays and floor installations. Cash prizes awarded for the best presentations. Works in-progress and projects for which you served as a contributing member of a larger faculty-led project are strongly encouraged. All OSU undergraduates are invited to present their work. Deadline to submit your application to participate is April 10, 5:00. Details here. . .
THE NATURAL TALENT DESIGN COMPETITION is an ideas competition. Entrants are asked to design a Living Building that has portions of its program dedicated to transportation, community and the environment. Teams of up to 5 people are strongly encouraged. The winning team will receive $1,000 and a ticket to compete in the national NTDC at Greenbuild 2009 in Phoenix, AZ. Registration deadline extended to April 16. Details here. . .

Universities create green building research programs (Portland Business Journal)
The OSU portion of the investment establishes the Oregon BEST Green Building Materials Lab, a collaboration between the College of Engineering and the College of Forestry. Research in the shared facility will focus on new green building materials, including: hybrid poplar wood engineered to be three times stronger than old-growth Douglas fir, new types of concrete and pavement that are more durable and environmentally friendly and recycled plastics used as building insulation.

The annual awards feature four OSU alums, including Jennifer Rosales (BSCE ‘ 95).
