FEB 15-21 – National Engineers Week. Nearly everything around you that makes your life easier or makes our economy go has been created by an engineer. Celebrate, fun facts!

FEB 16, Monday – Presidents Day (no USPS mail)

FEB 17, Tuesday – Faculty Meeting, 4pm

FEB 18, Wednesday - AGC Student Chapter sponsored field trip.  Two projects will be visited in the Eugene area:  (1) Hamilton Construction's $60-million design-build project that replaces two bridges over the McKenzie River, and (2) Lease Crutcher Lewis's UO College of Education Building or baseball field project. Vans will leave Owen Hall at 9:45 and return by 5:00, with a lunch stop between projects. Questions, contact Jan Strombeck or Kelly Davis, AGC Vice President. FEB 18, Wednesday –The Economic Crisis and Its Impacts on Higher Education, MU 109, 5 -7:00 pm. Learn how the current economic crisis will have an impact on your education, financial aid, and job market from OSU President Ed Ray and panelists.
 
FEB 19, Thursday – ENGINEERING CAREER FAIR, Alumni Center, 11-4pm. See interview workshop calendar here (pdf).

FEB 20, Friday – Oregon Stater Awards Reception. Faculty, staff and students are all invited to meet and celebrate our Civil and Construction Engineering alumni who will receive 2009 COE Oregon Stater Awards, in the Kearney Hall Atrium at 2:00 pm. Light refreshments.

FEB 21, Saturday - CH2M-Hill/OSU Model Bridge Contest, Owen Hall Atrium. Volunteer for a 2-hr shift with Cindy in 101 Kearney Hall. Balsa wood bridges made by high school students around Oregon are tested to failure.

FEB 21, Saturday – SWE Engineering Ball. Kelley Atrium, 7-10pm.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

As expected, all of our ASC student competition teams gave it their best shot and represented OSU CEM in a professional manner. I am very proud to be associated with them. In addition, our marine team earned first place recognition and our mechanical team earned third place. Thanks to all of you for helping to make it possible for our students to participate in this wonderful educational experience. Over 1300 students, faculty, and industry representatives were present this year, with 16 different competitions.

EERI UNDERGRADUATE SEISMIC COMPETITION - This past weekend, Derek Manwill, Dan Irons and Gunnar Leffler traveled to Salt Lake City to participate in the contest. Nineteen teams from across the country designed and built scale model high-rise buildings out of balsa wood. They were subjected to scaled versions of the El Centro, Northridge and Kobe earthquakes. Our OSU team finished third - congratulations, guys!! More info on the contest can be found here. . .

PROGRAM LINKS OSU, IRAQI STUDENTS - As many as 100 graduate and post-graduate engineering students from Iraq might soon enroll at OSU. Memoranda of understanding were signed by the presidents of OSU, Babylon University, and Dhi Qar University, who were among seven Iraqi university presidents visiting US campuses throughout the week. Full scholarships will be provided by the Iraqi government. Both universities plan to send representatives to an engineering faculty exchange seminar at OSU between the U.S. and Iraq in August, and will focus on sustainable engineering and design, green building materials and renewable energy technologies. CEM Taylor Kavanaugh (football) is one of four student athletes nominated to attend the NCAA Student Athlete Leadership Development Conference in May at Walt Disney World’s Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

CONSTRUCTION VOLUNTEERING in GUATEMALA – Apply by Feb. 28. Are you interested in spending your spring break as a construction volunteer in Guatemala? Join the Oregon State student group and be a part of this life-changing experience! This team will be involved in various construction projects associated with the betterment of underdeveloped Guatemalan communities. Log onto Facebook and search for the Oregon State group, titled “Construction Volunteering in Guatemala,” and contact Scott Mathewson at mathesco12@hotmail.com for more information. This is a great opportunity to learn about a unique and interesting culture, travel to a remote destination, and add a unique element to your construction industry resume.

ADVISING

Spring term registration begins Sunday, Feb. 22. Academic advising is now available for spring term. Please go to the online advising sign up to make an appointment to see either Sandy or Theresa.

All students with a Fall term GPA below a 2.5 must see an advisor for Spring term advising and to get their PIN. If you wish to see your faculty advisor they will be available the 18th, 19th, or 20th of this month otherwise please make an appointment to meet with Sandy or Theresa.

All students with a Fall term GPA above a 2.5 can pick up their Advising and Audit sheet with PIN from Julie in the Student Services Office (220 Owen). If you wish to still see your faculty advisor you will need to make an appointment to see them by using the online advising sign up, here.
