FEB 11-12 – MOCK INTERVIEWS, hosted by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. Sign up here; a confirmation email with your time and location will follow. This event provides an excellent opportunity for ALL engineering students to enhance their professional skills. You will gain experience in the stressful and relentless interview environment, develop crucial interview skills such as effective communication and delivery, obtain knowledge regarding their strengths and weaknesses as an interviewee, and finally gather confidence for actual interviews in the future.

FEB 13, Friday – TRAINING SESSION for Science and Math Investigative Learning Experiences (SMILE) Pre-college Program is recruiting for student volunteers and mentors to work with 4th-12th grade youth in several of our educational community outreach and on-campus events. Mentors can participate year round in a variety of activities designed to provide hands-on science experience, strengthen students’ knowledge, and raise academic and career aspirations. The program focuses on educationally disadvantaged students and those from groups with low high school graduation rates. College credit and paid opportunities are also available through our program. No prior science background is necessary. 110 Education Hall, 4:00-5:30, free pizza.

FEBRUARY 11-14 – Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Student Construction Management Competition in Reno/Sparks, NV. CEM is sending nine teams totaling 54 senior students, competing in Commercial Building, Design-Build, Electrical, Marine, Mechanical, Multi-family, Heavy/Civil, Preconstruction, Risk Management. The teams prepared for the competition throughout fall term, working with many industry partners and completing a final competition dry run in January, simulating the actual competition. Four CEM juniors will attend as observers and volunteers to learn the ropes for next year!  The teams will be accompanied by Coach Dave Rogge and Logistics Coordinator Jan Strombeck, plus four team coaches, Jared Hargens, Brodie Harvey, Nicholas Tymvios and Greg Strombeck. KEARNEY HALL OPEN HOUSE – was well attended and well received! Thanks again to our student tour guides for helping out. Our emeritus faculty, engineering colleagues and the OSU community appreciated it. Read the Gazette Times article. . .

 

 

 

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - for the CH2M-Hill/OSU Model Bridge Contest on Saturday, Feb 21, Owen Hall Atrium. There is a sign-up sheet with Cindy in 101 Kearney Hall for two-hour shifts from 8am-4pm. Balsa wood bridges made by high school students around Oregon are tested to failure. It’s a fun event – get involved! See last years photos. . .

Wrestler KYLE BRESSLER (CEM) is unbeaten, having an 8-0 record in his new weight class of 174 pounds and being ranked No. 11 in the nation already at the weight. Bressler received Pac-10 All-Academic Team honors in each of his first three seasons. Read the full Barometer article. . .

CONSTRUCTION VOLUNTEERING in GUATEMALA – Apply by Feb. 21. Are you interested in spending your spring break as a construction volunteer in Guatemala? Join the Oregon State student group and be a part of this life-changing experience! This team will be involved in various construction projects associated with the betterment of underdeveloped Guatemalan communities. Log onto Facebook and search for the Oregon State group, titled “Construction Volunteering in Guatemala,” and contact Scott Mathewson at mathesco12@hotmail.com for more information. This is a great opportunity to learn about a unique and interesting culture, travel to a remote destination, and add a unique element to your construction industry resume.

4th ANNUAL ENGINEERS BALL – Saturday, Feb 21 in the KEC Atrium, 7-10pm. This year's theme is SWING, and music will be provided by the famous Zaworski Brothers and their Band, who are excellent! Tickets on sale in room 103 MU for $7 each or a pair for $12, but…the WME office has purchased 20 tickets, which you can claim: FREE! Come to room 151 Batcheller Hall before they are all gone…Don’t miss out on this fun event. It is a great way to connect with COE students. Hosted by the OSU Chapter of the Society of Women Engineers.

ENGINEERS WEEK BANQUET - Monday, February 23, CH2M Hill Alumni Center. The keynote address will be delivered by Dr. Don Pettit, NASA Astronaut, COE alumnus, and Oregonian. Dr. Pettit recently returned from another space mission, logging about 6 million miles while helping to renovate and expand the space station. All CoE faculty and staff are encouraged to attend this banquet, which is being co-sponsored by OSU COE and the Willamette Valley Section of SWE. Click here for more details. NW Public Power Association Engineering & Operations - largest conference and tradeshow for public power utilities west of the Mississippi, provides a mix of education and networking. The conference provides opportunities to learn about the latest practices, innovations, and technology in the electric utility industry. During breakout sessions, which focus on specific disciplines within the utility, attendees will learn about the latest methods and solutions being used around the industry. The Student Program offers travel reimbursement & meals; apply before 2/27/09. Details.

ADVISING

Spring term registration begins Sunday, Feb. 22. Academic advising is now available for spring term. Please go to the online advising sign up to make an appointment to see either Sandy or Theresa.

All students with a Fall term GPA below a 2.5 must see an advisor for Spring term advising and to get their PIN. If you wish to see your faculty advisor they will be available the 18th, 19th, or 20th of this month otherwise please make an appointment to meet with Sandy or Theresa.

All students with a Fall term GPA above a 2.5 can pick up their Advising and Audit sheet with PIN from Julie in the Student Services Office (220 Owen). If you wish to still see your faculty advisor you will need to make an appointment to see them by using the online advising sign up, here.
