CONGRATULATIONS - During their Homecoming Weekend in October, Prof. Robert Schultz was inducted into the Worcester Polytechnic Institute 'Athletic Hall of Fame'. His alma mater's Hall of Fame awards those who 'have bestowed honor and recognition upon both themselves and WPI' as a result of participating in WPI athletics. One of many notable tributes reveals that Bob earned 12 varsity letters and was a four-year letter-winner in three sports (football, basketball, baseball). Bob continues his love of sports and still officiates at local high school football games. Read more . . .
ALUMNA Brenda Shonkwiler Marsh (BSCE & Honors BS in 2001, summa cum laude) - took on the role as an “expert” in a documentary on steel frames in high-rise buildings for National Geographic. The series “Engineering Connections" was hosted by Richard Hammond (known for his involvement in the popular British show “Top Gear”) and was aired in the US and the UK over the summer. Over the past several years, Brenda has been working toward getting licensed as a Structural Engineer through the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE). She has completed the final (and most challenging) hurdle: the Structural Engineering exam for Chartered Membership. Fortunately, Brenda passed the exam first time around. Brenda is a senior structural engineer in the UK with engineering consultants Gifford.
The COMAP Mathematical Contest in Modeling will be held February 5-9, 2009. An OSU info meeting will be held during the week of Jan 19-23 (day and time to be decided by those who reply to Prof. Nathan Gibson, gibsonn@math.oregonstate.edu, Dept of Mathmatics, by Friday Jan 16). This is an international, team based, undergraduate, mathematical modeling competition. Each team has three students, from any major. Two open-ended, real-world problems will be offered. Teams will choose one problem and write up a thorough solution approach within 4 days. Teams may use any inanimate source of data or materials. Submissions will be judged on the basis of scientific merits as well as clarity and organization of the written report. Contest details.
Applications for the L.L. Stewart Faculty Development Award are due January 31, 2009. The L.L. Stewart Faculty Development Award provides individual faculty members with grants of up to $2,200 for professional development activities that have a clear connection to the enhancement of teaching and student learning at OSU. Two grants for $4,400 may also be considered for exceptionally compelling and well-written proposals. Applications are evaluated jointly by the Advancement of Teaching Committee of the Faculty Senate and the Center for Teaching and Learning. Because January 31 falls on a Saturday, the applications will be accepted until 5:00 pm Monday, February 2, 2009. If you have any questions, contact Evelyn Reynolds (ereynolds@oregonstate.edu).
