NOV. 11, Tuesday – Veterans Day celebrates the bravery and sacrifice of all US veterans, was originally set as a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. No USPS mail service.

NOV. 11, Tuesday - Networking and Dining Etiquette, 5:00 pm, CH2M Hill Alumni Center, $8 registration. Do you remember your mother saying, ‘you have only one chance to make a first impression’? It’s true.

NOV. 12-13 – OSU Training Days. Several staff members will attend workshops throughout the day, so the main office will be short-staffed.

NOV. 13, Thursday - High Tech After Hours builds valuable relationships between local businesses, high-tech entrepreneurs, educators, investors, students and local officials. For the first time this year OSU’s College of Business and College of Engineering will co-host this event, making this the powerhouse showcase of collaboration between industry, education, and commerce in the Willamette Valley. CH2M HILL Alumni Center, 1-8:00 pm. No charge for students.

NOV 14, Friday - Special Faculty Meeting on Curriculum, 3-4 pm, 320 Owen Hall.

NOV. 17, Monday - GRAD SCHOOL FORUM - 6-8pm, Owen 102 - Thinking about graduate school? An evening of short presentations from faculty will highlight graduate programs and research in each CCE discipline. A panel of professionals will be on hand to answer your questions on the pros and cons of graduate school in finding a job. The panel will also consist of current graduate students to answer any questions you may have about life in graduate school. Sponsored by Chi Epsilon.  Food and drinks provided.

NOV 18, Tuesday - ASCE HOST-A-STUDENT DINNER - Lloyd Center Doubletree in Portland. Vans leave the Owen Hall atrium at 4:00 pm. Questions? contact Prof. thomas.miller@oregonstate.edu.

Fundamentals of Engineering/Land Surveying Exam – deadline to apply for the spring exam is December 1, 2008.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP TRAINING OPPORTUNITY - If you're interested in being an ASCE officer in the coming year (elections are held at the end of Winter term), there is a fun opportunity for leadership training, to learn more about national ASCE, and to meet students and professionals from all over the country. The Regions 8 and 9 ASCE Workshop for Student Chapter Leaders will be held in San Francisco January 23-24. Travel expenses are paid by the student chapter and most meals are included at the conference. If interested, please contact Dr Tom Miller, thomas.miller@oregonstate.edu, ASCE Faculty Advisor, 344 Owen Hall, 737-3322 before the end of November. It's an annual event and always a fun trip.

Study in Tunisia Info Session (Monday, November 10, 2008 4-5PM, Kidder 236) and Study in Germany Information Session (Tuesday, November 11, 2008 4-5PM, Snell 448). We'll discuss courses, language learning, financial aid, and more.

DO YOU NEED ANY HELP WITH YOUR CLASSES THIS TERM? ASCE is offering a free tutoring program this year. If you are in civil engineering contact us. It doesn't matter what year you are. We will find you a fellow student with experience in the class you need help in. In addition to this, we could use some more students interesting in being tutors. NOV. 11, Tuesday - AGC Speaker Meeting, SWINERTON/HMH Builders (Sacramento, CA), 6:00 pm, 103 Owen Hall.  Topic:  MEP Coordination.  Food and soft drinks will be available.  The Swinerton family of companies has been providing construction services since 1888. Swinerton is at the forefront in reinforced concrete, new building technology, online digital planning and project management systems, and standards for Green Building.  HMH Builders (Harbison-Mahony-Higgins) is under the Swinerton umbrella and focuses on four divisions:  Buildings; Medical; Special Projects including: office, retail, medical, ADA upgrades and seismic upgrades; and Concrete Services specializing in architectural concrete projects of all sizes.

NOV. 12, Wednesday - AGC Speaker Meeting, LEASE CRUTCHER LEWIS (Portland, OR), 6:00 pm, 106 Owen Hall.  Topic:  Beyond LEED – What the Future Holds for Sustainable Construction.  Food and soft drinks will be available.  LCL has offices in Portland, Seattle, Tacoma and Toronto, Canada.  Lease Crutcher Lewis divisions include the commercial division which handles large, complex projects valued over $10,000,000; the special projects division which division specializes in smaller, more intense projects valued from $50,000 to $10,000,000, often for repeat clients; the construction management division; and Holyoke Fine Homes.

NOV. 13, Thursday - AGC Speaker Meeting, HENSEL PHELPS CONSTRUCTION COMPANY (San Jose, CA), 6:00 pm, 106 Owen Hall.  Topic:  TBA.   Food and soft drinks will be available.  Hensel Phelps is headquartered in Greeley, CO and has offices throughout the country.  HP has been in California since 1967.  The Northern California District in San Jose does a variety of projects including transportation, hospitality, detention, technology, education and public assembly/office throughout Northern California, Oregon, Washington, and Nevada.

NOV. 13, Thursday - OHRC Pedestrian Bridge Design Meeting. The first design meeting will be held at 4:00 pm in 103 Owen Hall. Come prepared with basic bridge concepts/ideas, with sketches, to begin the design process. We will vote for the best three ideas, to be developed into presentable prototypes. We will also be forming sub-teams for this design process. We need people with CAD, PowerPoint, and basic writing skills, as well as people with basic structural design and construction estimating experience. This is a great project with excellent resume-padding potential.

NOV. 13, Thursday -  ASCE Speaker Meeting in Owen 102 at 6:00 pm. Glen Hunt of ISE Incorporated will come to speak about "Owning and Operating a Small Business."  If you're interested in starting your own business someday, you don't want to miss this meeting!  Food and drinks will be provided.
