MAY 5-9 - Queer Pride Week Celebration

MAY 9, Friday – Engineering Expo, Kelley Engineering Center, 1:00-5:00 pm.  ASCE’s concrete canoe and steel bridge, just back from the regional competitions will be on display. There will be several exhibits showing OSU’s success in the CEM estimating competition in Reno. We will also have the top 3 posters showing the design results of the CE Senior Capstone project. OSU is working directly with the US Army Corps of Engineers on a Fish Collection and Transportation Facility at Cougar Dam near Eugene.

MAY 5, Monday – presentation by Mr. Jason Ideker (Ph.D. candidate, The University of Texas at Austin), candidate for CCE Innovative Materials faculty position, 320 Owen Hall, 10:00 am. All faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend.

MAY 6, Tuesday – presentation by Dr. Yogini Deshpande (Michigan Technological University), candidate for CCE Innovative Materials faculty position, 320 Owen Hall, 10:00 am. All faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend.

MAY 6, Tuesday – Brian Hays presents his Masters of Business and Engineering portfolio of coursework, or "How I learned to stop worrying and love the MBE”, in 106 Owen Hall, 10:00 am. Advisor: Prof. David Sillars.

Linda Hubbard, Grants and Contracts Accountant, leaves this week for her next adventure - retirement!

Hinsdale Wave Research Laboratory. Lt. Gen. Robert Van Antwerp, US Army Chief of Engineers and commander of the US Army Corps of Engineers, visited OSU last week to participate in the annual Joint Service Review for our four ROTC branches at OSU.

SURVEYING (GEOMATICS) STUDENT APPRECIATION NIGHT - May 19, 2008. The Willamette Branch of the Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon (PLSO) will host students who have an interest in surveying to a free dinner at the LaSells Stewart Center on campus. Evening agenda and registration here. Please sign up before Thursday May 15, 2008 (this is a catered meal and a head count is needed by that date).

AGC STUDENT CHAPTER 23nd ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT - Friday, May 23, 2008 at Trysting Tree Golf Course. Student cost: $30, includes 18 holes of golf with cart, lunch and awards. Sign-up early and you may be sponsored by a contractor attending the tournament. Register your foursome with Jan Strombeck in 220 Owen. Deadline to register is Monday, May 19, 2008. OF ALL THE NATURAL DISASTERS, an earthquake is one of the most hazardous and devastating. The April 2008 Professional Engineers Magazine highlights Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) and Oregon State’s Wave Research Facility, the only one of its kind in the country. NICHOLE JACKSON, BSCE ’07 – writes from her transportation design position with WSDOT in the Clark County office, “I'm really enjoying it so far, I just got put on a project for I-5 (Mellen to Blakeslee) - the horrible curve north of Chehalis.  It’s a 120 million dollar project. I love it!” Nichole is also a Private First Class in the Oregon Army National Guard (out of Eugene) as a Motor Transport Operator.

STUDENT CHAPTERS

MAY 7, Wednesday - ASCE Chapter Meeting discussing their service project with the Oregon Hatchery Research Center (we will do the preliminary design for a pedestrian bridge). Students who want to get involved with this multi-disciplinary project should come and join the team. There is something for everyone; freshman and sophomores are encouraged to come! More information will be available on the ASCE website. 102 Owen Hall, 6:00 pm.

MAY 7, Wednesday - Engineers Without Borders Meeting. Lisa Farmen, president of Crystal Clear Technologies, a small start-up company based in Portland. She has been working to develop a low-cost water purifier to remove both heavy metal and biological contaminants from drinking water. Her research has applications for the third world and areas of the US that have clean water issues. Lisa will present her research, its application, and a prototype of a human powered pump that will remove water contaminants. Election results and pizza as well!  KEC 1003, 7:00 pm.
