ANNOUNCEMENTS

CONGRATULATIONS to our ASCE Student Chapter, who received a Certificate of Commendation marking it as one of the top 25 chapters (of over 250) in the country. This is recognition of the outstanding overall performance and leadership from the outgoing group of officers led by Kyle Taniguchi, who was perhaps our first freshman President. Each of the officers did an excellent job this past year in providing activities for our CE students and in community service. PROF. TOM MILLER was awarded a Certificate of Commendation as faculty advisor for the ASCE Student Chapter. “This is a clear reflection of the excellent officers and practitioner advisors I have the privilege of working with. Our chapter is consistently one of the best because of the dedication of these folks, and I especially look forward to working with the newly-elected officers - a great looking team!”
BASKETBALL GAME UPDATE – “An amazing comeback........almost!” The faculty/staff/grad student team almost pulled off the upset of the year, but fell to the student team 85-65 in a close battle. After a bit, the student team became known as "Gloria and the Boys," with Gloria Singharaj leading all scorers from outside the 3 pt line. There was some hushed talk before and during the game of a wager on the personal performance of two of the players. This clearly violated NCAA, NBA, NIT, and ASCE regulations, so it was fortunate that it resulted in a draw and no winnings exchanged hands. There was also some question of 5 or 6 points that mysteriously appeared on the faculty side of scoreboard. In spite of these issues, everyone seemed to have a good time. Thanks to Laura and Alena for setting it up! The next sporting event is the CE vs CEM softball game at the end of the year picnic. All students, faculty and staff are invited and welcome to play! Hope to see you there!

ASCE REGIONAL CONFERENCE at Portland State University. 22 OSU students and 2 advisors spent the weekend at PSU competing against schools from throughout the Pacific Northwest region. I was very proud of all of the students who went to the conference - both their performance and attitude.
The canoe team placed 7th overall, 5th in final product and just got better and better in the races. Really did a good job working together as a team!
The steel bridge team did a good job of making improvements to the bridge since fabricating and testing at LBCC, and unfortunately came up a bit short of carrying the 2500 lbs without deflecting more than two inches. The team showed a lot of patience and character throughout the contest and great sportsmanship.
Finally, Helen Wu did a wonderful job with the technical paper and presentation. As a freshman, she handled a difficult topic on privatization of transportation with professionalism and skill. She responded to questions from the judges with maturity. I was very proud!
Overall, it was a very fun conference, and hope we learn from this year, and have lots of students from freshmen to seniors involved as we prepare to do even better in Montana in 2009.
- Prof. Tom Miller, ASCE Faculty Advisor
