DR. SOLOMON YIM OF THE SCHOOL OF CIVIL AND CONSTRUCTION ENGINEERING was elected Fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering in the fall of 2007, citing his significant contribution to basic and applied research in analytical, computational and experimental coupled fluid-structure interaction systems and professional services in both academics and industry. In the early 1980’s, Dr. Yim’s research focuses were on vortex-induced vibration; experimental measurements; and probability-based design methodology. Since joining Oregon State University in 1987, he has extended his work to include system stability and identification; computational fluid and structural dynamics; and prediction of hydrodynamic loads. He has applied the techniques to offshore and coastal structures under extreme hydrodynamic loads including hurricanes, storm surge and tsunamis. His research findings are published in over 250 journal/conference papers and reports. Dr. Yim has sustained service on committees and organized conferences in the ASME Ocean, Offshore and Arctic Engineering (OOAE) Division. He also served as an associate editor of the Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering (OMAE) Journal for seven years prior to becoming the editor in Sept. 2007.
