Construction Program:
Construction Program
Frequently Asked Questions about the MBE Degree
The MBE degree program differs from the existing M.S.C.E. degree program in
several ways. The degree allows more business course content and features an
internship as the preferred independent study alternate. At the discretion of
the supervising professor, a degree candidate may optionally fulfill the degree
requirements with a project or all coursework. The degree accepts qualified
candidates with any bachelor's degree from an accredited program and industry
experience, or an appropriate civil engineering or construction management degree.
The program made possible through: the Robert
C. Wilson Graduate Program in Construction Engineering and Management Fund,
and the Oregon State University College of
Engineering.
For more detailed information about the new MBE degree, please review
the FAQs, below.
Q: Do I qualify for admittance to the program?
A: Admission requirements for the proposed MBE program will be as follows:
Any undergraduate degree with three years of experience working in construction
industry management or supervisory positions. Candidates with a BS in
Construction Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Construction Management
will not be required to have work experience, although work experience
is strongly recommended;
a minimum GPA of 3.0 in the last 90 quarter hours of course work,
combined (verbal and quantitative) GRE scores exceeding 1100, GRE
verbal greater than 400, (or GMAT score greater than 500) and
a minimum TOEFL score of 580 (international students).
Note that individual business courses have certain undergraduate-level
prerequisites that must be completed prior to taking the business courses.
This prerequisite information is available in the on-line course catalog
at the listing for each individual course. Admitted students that lack
these prerequisites may take the required courses, but the courses will
not count as credit for the MBE degree.
Q: How do I apply for acceptance to the MBE Program?
A: Admittance to the MBE Program proceeds as with admittance to other
graduate programs at OSU. Begin by downloading and completing the required
application form available at the OSU
Office of Admissions/ Graduate School. Due to the recent approval
of the new degree, the "major code" is not yet listed in the
.PDF schedule supplied on the Gradute Admissions website; use the code
"3380" where requested on the applications form. Gather all
of the materials required--note that a GRE score is required among other
items, and submit the package to the Registrar's office as indicated.
Additionally, though not requested, please plan to include a resume of
your work experience, especially as it applies to the experience requirement
for the MBE.
Q: I am interested in the MBE, but due to work restrictions I am only
able to take one or two classes for now. What are my options if I choose
to not enter as a full-time graduate student?
A: Taking one or two courses is possible. Be aware that the same prerequisites
exist to enroll in any individual course as if admitted as a full graduate
student. Also-- the coursework is designed to be taken in the order listed
in the preliminary schedule
of coursework. Current options for taking individual courses include:
Enrolling in a non-degree program such as a Non-Degree
Seeking Graduate Student, or as a Post-Baccalaureate
Student. In either case, there are limitations on the number of coursework
hours (15) that will count toward the proposed MBE (or any other) degree,
and other limitations; see the graduate catalog for details.
Taking individual courses as a part of a different degree proram, such as
the M.S.C.E. program or the M.A.I.S.
(Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies) program.
Q: Are the courses available in Portland?
A: The coursework is scheduled to allow a student to attend classes in
Corvallis on a one-day-per-week basis, thus minimizing travel while providing
a centralized location of study for all students. In certain cases, some
of the business coursework, especially any prerequisites to the graduate-level
business coursework, may be taken at Portland State University. Please
contact us if you would
like to consider this option. Graduate-level business coursework is timed
to occur on the same day as the required engineering coursework.
Q: What does it take to earn the new degree?
A: Check out our MBE flow diagram.
Q: How will the program be scheduled?
A: Check out our preliminary
schedule of coursework for the next two years.
Q: Where may I find additional information?
A: Begin by browsing the OSU
graduate school website, and contact
us with any questions you may have.
