CIVIL ENGINEERING

The purpose of this department is to give the student a thorough course of theoretical instruction accompanied by as much laboratory and field practice as possible. The course includes such basic studies as English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Drawing, Materials of Engineering, Applied Mechanics and Hydraulics in addition to the technical work given by this department. During the Junior and Senior years, the student may take either German, French or Spanish or, for special reasons approved by the head of the department, may elect English or other work instead.

In addition to the studies required in this course the student has opportunity during these two years to elect subjects that may be of special interest to him from the other engineering courses thus allowing a flexibility not otherwise possible. Recognizing the value of drawing to the professional engineer as a means of expressing his ideas and of carrying out his plans and also as a means of opening some of the most desirable positions to the young engineer graduate, the department lays special emphasis upon this important subject. Besides the general course given by the Mechanical Department and required of Civil Engineering students, two additional and more technical courses are arranged for Civil Engineering students. One of these, a course in lettering and tinting, is given by the department of Freehand Drawing and the other by this department and is described below. Much additional drawing is required in connection with the preparation of plans and working drawings as part of the office work of the higher technical courses.
