In 2001 Oregon State University
Press published Robert W. Hadlow’s definitive biography of Conde
McCullough—must reading for anyone interested in bridges and engineering.
Hadlow writes in the epilogue that thanks to the renewed attention McCullough’s
bridges have received, the Oregon Department of Transportation plans to
restore rather than rehabilitate or replace Conde’s finest bridges
around the state, ensuring their preservation for future generations. |

On the south and ocean side of the new Waldport Bridge,
which replaced Conde McCullough's, there is an interpretive center with
displays on Conde McCullough and the building of the old and new Waldport
Bridge. The center features displays on the area through time, including
travel during the pre- and post-Conde eras.
In terms of aesthetics, the new bridge did not match the design of the
old bridge, though some obelisks and other features from the old bridge
were incorporated into the new. In view of this the Highway Department
has decided to restore Conde McCullough's bridges rather than replace
them, thus preserving these historically significant bridges. |
